- Red pandas are not related to giant pandas and were discovered 50 years earlier.
- Red pandas have been identified as an indicator species of the Eastern Himalaya n temperate broadleaf forest ecoregion: a global biodiversity hotspot.
- Red pandas are the only living member of their own taxonomic family.
- The global red panda population has declined by 50% over the last 20 years. It is estimated that there are somewhere between 2,500 and 10,000 remaining in the wild.
