First Panda Challenge

Red pandas are threatened with extinction.

According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, the global red panda population has declined by 50% over the last 20 years. There may be as few as 2,500 remaining in the wild.

Red pandas are the only living member of their own unique family (Ailuridae) and an indicator of the ecological health of the Eastern Himalayasa global biodiversity hotspot. Unlike the name implies, they are not related to giant pandas and were discovered 50 years earlier!

This is why we have launched the First Panda Challenge: a response to the endangered status of such a unique and important species.

We are seeking committed partners to join us as First Panda Challengers. Your gift will double the impact of donations made during RPN's year-end campaign and bolster our efforts to conserve wild red pandas.

This is crucial in a time when the endangered panda is losing habitat to agriculture and human settlement and has become the target of poaching for the black market pet trade.

Plant A Red Panda Home

2019 First Panda Challengers will support plantation and reforestation activities in Nepal.

With forest loss at such alarming rates in Nepal, restoration and reforestation activities are critical to the survival of this endangered species. Plant A Red Panda Home will restore more than 32 hectares of core red panda habitat with more than 30,000 native trees.
